What is podcasting ?
At its simplest, podcasting is simply the creation
of
RSS
feeds
containing
audio
enclosures. With an enclosure aware RSS reader (aggregator)
capable of downloading enclosures, users are able
to subscribe to podcasting feeds and have audio delivered
automatically when it becomes available.
The name podcasting was originally derived from
the use of Apple's iPod device to listen to the MP3
files delivered via enclosures in RSS feeds.
Although you don't need an iPod to read / listen
to podcasts, having an iPod allows you to 'take it
with you'. By subscribing to podcast feeds (RSS 2.0
feeds with enclosures) and having the MP3 files downloaded
to your iPod, you can listen to all of that content
offline and take it with you wherever you go.
